Three new eateries will open this year in Willis Tower, Chicago’s iconic skyscraper, including Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, sandwich chain Mendocino Farms and Mediterranean restaurant Cava. They are part of efforts to make the Willis Tower “a modernized workplace and community destination in the heart of downtown,” according to a news release from building manager Perform Properties last week. The eateries join Catalog, a five-story food, retail and entertainment space that opened in 2022.

Chicago is famous for Italian beef, hot dogs, cheeseburgers and other carnivorous dishes. But PETA, the animal welfare group, named Chicago as the country’s most vegan-friendly city, in a news release first shared with the Sun-Times. “America’s former meatpacking capital is now a paradise for vegan eating with an abundance of animal-friendly restaurants,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement.

Grubhub this week awarded cash prizes to 31 Chicago area restaurants that opened in 2020 and are still running five years later. Most restaurants received $2,500 while two won $5,000. Since 1943, Kaage Newsstand in Edison Park has witnessed some of the biggest headlines over the course of eight decades. Now, it is making its own headline with news it will close on June 29. It’s the end of an era for the third-generation family business near the Edison Park Metra station. Owner Mike Kaage, 68, plans to retire from running the newsstand that his grandfather — a former newspaper delivery driver — bought for $100 during World War II.
