In the wake of increased national immigration enforcement by federal agencies, Lake County State’s Atty. Eric Rinehart issued a statement recently saying that his office will not ask about an individual’s immigration status, especially people who are crime victims. Rinehart’s office issued the statement on June 13, saying in part that LCSAO will not share immigration status information with federal authorities unless presented with a valid warrant.

A Waukegan man drowned Tuesday evening while swimming in Lake Michigan near Zion, according to Lake County authorities. He was identified Wednesday by the coroner’s office as Luis Espinosa Contreras, 20. Local fire departments were alerted at about 6:26 p.m. by witnesses who reported seeing Contreras slip under the water at Illinois Beach State Park but not resurface. Water conditions were calm with light winds, authorities said.

A Gurnee-area man injured several people and damaged six cars as he attempted to flee from police Tuesday afternoon, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said. Reno J. Giangiorgi, 34, of the 18500 block of West Judy Drive, is facing DUI and fleeing charges as well as multiple traffic infractions after he was arrested after he crashed his car into another vehicle. Four occupants of the car, including two children, were hospitalized with what police said were not life-threatening injuries.

Gurnee police said a pedestrian was struck and killed by a motorist Monday night near the Six Flags amusement park. The identity of the adult male victim has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin and an autopsy, police said. The man was walking in the eastbound lanes of Washington Street near the Illinois Route 21 intersection at about 10:05 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle traveling in the same direction.

Grayslake police say they arrested a woman after she fired a gun at someone in a domestic dispute. Tanea Landrum, 34, was taken into custody following the incident on June 7. Police said they were called to the 300 block of Quist Court at around 2:39 p.m. for a report of a single gunshot. Witnesses told police that a domestic dispute had arisen between several people, and that Landrum, as she was leaving, fired one shot from a .22-caliber pistol in the direction of the victim.
