Turkey Vultures watch over Princeton

They are not traditionally attractive flyers, however the Turkey Vulture is an interesting aviator. This picture was captured by Princeton wildlife photographer John Moody, near Princeton. According to allaboutbirds.org, Turkey Vultures are effective scavengers, stalking farmers’ fields and hanging out beside highways, waiting to optimize kills. The Turkey Vulture uses its keen sense of smell to detect carrion.

Princeton Family Services delivers backpacks to Princeton students

Ten students from John Allison Elementary and Vermillion Forks Elementary received back packs stuffed with school supplies recently, thanks to the Kits for Kids program sponsored by Telus. Boundary-Similkameen MLA Roly Russell reached out to Princeton Family Services (PFS) to ask them to co-ordinate the delivery of supplies. Chelsea Jwaszko, who will be assuming the executive director’s role at PFS later this year as current ED Jenny Pedwell retires, organized the drop off to schools.
Third annual Fenchurch Block Party a hit for the Town of Princeton

The third annual Fenchurch Avenue block party, Sunday, August 25, was the most successful celebration to date. The gathering was long planned for the previous day, Saturday, but incessant rains made it impossible. With fingers crossed everyone waited for next day. More than 100 people crowded the street, enjoying a free barbecue, conversation with neighbours, and plenty of games for children and adults. Todd and Kim Davidson were the hosts.
Princeton Show and Shine expected to be bigger and brighter than ever

Start your engines. The 2024 Princeton Show and Shine is waxed up and ready to go on Labour Day weekend. Show and Shine was a staple on the community calendar for years, but was eventually ended when the organizer retired. In 2023, five motor enthusiasts brought the tradition back with a bang, drawing hundreds of cars and people to town. “Last year we were voted best car show by Cruising the Okanagan. This year we are hoping to be bigger and better,” said Therese Grgich.
Princeton's Axeman hits the mark

Princeton’s Axeman Brian Hurd made his international debut at the 2024 Doublebit Axe Throwing World Championships last week in England. The three-day tournament, in Thirsk, Yorkshire, attracted 208 throwers from around the globe. The competition progressed through three rounds of elimination. While Hurd made the first cut he was put out in the second competition and did not advance to the finals. His wife Sylvia, who accompanied him on the trip, said Hurd was pleased with his performance.
Emergency water restrictions ordered for much of Princeton

A significant portion of Princeton is under an emergency order to conserve water, following a mechanical failure at the Memorial Park well, Tuesday, August 27, according to a release from town hall. The area includes downtown, Allison flats, tunnel area, the Pines, Deblyn and Lynnwood mobile home parks, Eagle Crescent, Deerview, the airport, industrial park, and east Princeton. These are all areas that are already under the boil water advisory, which was activated after the 2021 flood.
New software at town hall will afford residents many benefits

Welcome to the future. At a recent meeting council voted to purchase new administrative software. “It will make things a lot smoother,” commented Mayor Spencer Coyne. The software package is included in the five-year financial plan, and will cost $54,000. Council heard that the current system, which was bought 25 years ago, was not user-friendly and customer support services would often take weeks or months to resolve an issue.
C-Can issue tests Hedley's appetite for zoning and building regulations

The creation of a storage complex comprised of C-Cans has created a dust up in Hedley. Sean Donovan is an entrepreneur who lives in Keremeos with his family. He owns three rental properties in Hedley, and recently added eight C-Cans to these lots. They will be rented for storage, said Donovan. The move raised some eyebrows and lots of comments on local face book pages. Many people posted anonymously and suggested that the units are unsightly and should be removed.
Fear can be good, and also very, very bad

Fear. Frightening word, yes? I’m afraid of things. Snakes. Terrified of snakes. It doesn’t need to be a rattlesnake or king cobra. A plain, pedestrian garter snake will suffice. After all, if a snake can give you a heart attack just by sitting there in the garden having a sun bath and grinning at you, the ability to inject poisonous venom is redundant and also a waste of venom. This was rather debilitating, as a young person.
