    NAUGATUCK - Town officials are delivering on a promise to reduce taxes but to get there they are closing Salem Elementary School, tapping into surplus funds, and laying off 26 people from the school system. Borough officials will present a combined school and town budget of $144.5 million for 2025-26 at a hearing on Monday at the Board of Education conference room, 497 Rubber Ave., at 6:30 p.m. The budget is expected to be adopted on Wednesday.

    PROSPECT - Residents turned out Monday to the Regional School District 16's annual meeting and voted overwhelmingly in favor of a $45.2 million school budget for 2025-26. With a show of hands, the budget was approved 167-23. Region 16 Board of Education Vice Chairman Robert Hiscox, who has been serving on the school board for 14 years, said the district meeting was the biggest crowd school officials have seen in a long time.     PROSPECT - Residents approved a $10.9 million budget for the 2025-26 at the annual town meeting Thursday that increases spending by $679,542, or 6.5%, over the current year. Residents also approved borrowing $900,000 for road improvements. "The town could still keep moving forward," Mayor Robert Chatfield said after the vote. Chatfield said he expects a decrease to the tax rate because the 2024 grand list of taxable property has gone up by about $290 million.

    NAUGATUCK - The shelves are stocked at local food banks but managers are worried that might not last after federal cuts to Connecticut Foodshare and with more people seeking help. The U.S. Department of Agriculture in March cut $2.7 million in federal funds for two programs under Connecticut Foodshare - $1 million from Local Food Purchase Assistance and $1.7 million from the Emergency Food Assistance Program.
