TORRINGTON - Nearly 20 municipalities have been awarded $18.8 million in state assessment and remediation grants to develop blighted properties. Among this group, Torrington is receiving a $600,000 grant for the remaining abatement and demolition work on the 9.4-acre former Torrington Co. property at 70 North Main St.The demolition of the last of the 26 buildings on the former manufacturing company's campus was completed last year. That work was funded through a $2 million state grant.

HARTFORD - Chants of "Free David! Free David!" echoed outside the Capitol as members of the Service Employees International Union demanded the release of David Huerta, the California president of a union that represents janitors, security officers and airport service workers. State legislators received a two-year, $55.8 billion budget plan on Monday that adds approximately $1.2 billion in spending in the first year and $1.4 billion in the second year. The budget plan that Democratic majority leaders and Gov. Ned Lamont negotiated represents a 4.6% increase in spending in the first year and a 5.3% increase in the second year.

WATERBURY - Tavoyah Vernon is a mother of four children, ages 5, 3, 2 and 1 and works as a counselor at Waterbury's Gilmartin Elementary School. Her 5-year-old and 2-year are diagnosed with autism. Vernon said she doesn't have the option of staying at home to be with her young children.
