    2 1/1 Major public toilets in Winchester have reopened after a two-month refurbishment. The loos in Abbey Gardens closed on March 10 and reopened on schedule today (Monday, May 12). The city council has recently come under fire for the worsening standards in the facilities, notably at Market Lane by St Maurice's Covert. The council agreed a major refurbishment programme last year and the Abbey Gardens in The Broadway are the first major ones to be upgraded.

    5 1/1 Members of Romsey Bowling Club have been celebrating VE Day at their green. On Bank Holiday Monday May 5, members dressed in 1940s clothing or patriotic red white and blue. The celebrations started with a glass of bubbly, followed by a game of bowls. A spokesperson said: "We then enjoyed afternoon tea in the clubhouse, a lovely afternoon, to mark VE Day."

    2 1/1 THE Red Arrows jetted across Hampshire as part of the VE day events marking the end of the Second World War in Europe in 1945. Glenn Gilbertson captured the display team at 2pm today, Monday May 5, as it passed over Alresford after taking part in the VE Day Commemoration Flypast over Buckingham Palace. The Royal Air Force’s aerobatic team will be joining 22 other aircraft for a flypast over Buckingham Palace.

    6 1/1 DO you remember the old cinema in North Walls? The Cannon closed in early 1989 despite a campaign to save it. It meant that Winchester was without a silver screen until the late 1990s when The Screen opened in the former chapel of Peninsula Barracks in Southgate Street. The newspaper cameras were there to capture the last days. At the time it seemed the end of an era, that cinemas were on their last legs.
