They're an Australian staple but the price of a humble meat pie is rising at one of the country's biggest bakers, thanks in part to increasing power prices. Adelaide bakery Vili's is about to renew its electricity contract and general manager Peter Utry has told 7.30 the cheapest quote is a 22 per cent rise. "Our energy bills are around the $500,000 mark, and obviously our increase on top of that, well, you know, we're looking at roughly an extra $100,000 on top of that number," he said.

When Adelaide Designer Homes was placed into liquidation last month electrician Ralph Czabayski was one of more than 80 creditors left out of pocket. It also left 20 home owners like Joanna and Henry Clough without a completed home. They're now living in their friend's tiny spare room and are expecting a baby next month. Mr Czabayski is $80,000 out of pocket. It's a staggering figure but for him it's just the cost of doing business.

Imagine purchasing your new home only for there to be no water infrastructure and for your sewage to be stored in a pit. Trucks come every day to remove the waste. This is the reality for more than 700 homes in the townships of Angle Vale, Virginia, Roseworthy and the suburb of Riverlea, where residents are having their sewage transported up to 40 kilometres by road to Adelaide's main wastewater treatment plant. The plant is also at capacity.
