Former US president Joe Biden has long speculated his son's fatal brain cancer was caused by exposure to fumes from burn pits. Now there are concerns Australian soldiers have been affected, in a toxic legacy of those conflicts.

It was a move that coincided with major problems relating to the temperature of the plant's blast furnace, which led to a four-month halt in steel production and cost millions.

Federal parliament has passed legislation that allows for nuclear waste to be stored and disposed of at a shipping yard in Adelaide. Residents said they were not consulted or told of the plan. Construction of nuclear submarines is expected to start in Adelaide by the end of the decade. The $368 billion AUKUS pact is promising thousands of jobs and the return of submarine construction to South Australia.
