Do a quick Google search for "best noodles in Dallas" and you’ll likely be directed to Malai Kitchen. Since 2011 this Thai and Vietnamese kitchen has been a local favorite. Husband and wife co-owners Braden and Yasmin Wages began their restaurant venture in Uptown and have since opened three more locations around North Texas. The thick, chewy, flavor-grabbing noodles were already some of the best in Dallas. But recently, they got an upgrade.

The aromatics of the Dallas Grilled Cheese Co. have been replaced with Ladylove Lounge & Sound. Drawing inspiration from the of the '70s, this venue is a years-in-the-making passion project from duo David Grover and Kate Siamro of the nearby vinyl shop, Spinster Records. Since opening their record store in 2014, the long-time stalwarts of the local music scene thought it was time to bring more music to Bishop Arts District.

The Observer did a review of some of the best examples of Southeast Asian dumplings earlier this year, but we didn’t want to give short shrift to the other cultures throughout the world that also lay claim to their own versions of these savory pockets of flavor. With that in mind, here’s a sampling of just a few of the other types and styles of dumplings that can be found in the area.

Grab a whiff of the uniquely Indian scents wafting around this unassuming street corner in Dallas. A pirate statue poses on the patio, smiling as aromas of marinated chicken tikka, clay pot biryani and fresh-baked naan tempt passersby almost instinctively through the front door. Shiva’s Bar & Grill is named after the Hindu god Shiva. The food here is rich in flavor, aroma and all else good. Wait times reach up to 20 to 30 minutes during peak hours.

Local restaurateur Jon Alexis is keeping busy. After opening Escondido late last year and Ramble Room early this year to go with his longtime seafood stalwarts TJ's Seafood and Mailbu Poke, he now has his sights set on another new concept in an old space. Birdie's Eastside (no connection to Birdie at The Exchange in downtown), set to open this winter, will be a large indoor and outdoor bar and grill in what used to be Luby's on East Mockingbird Lane. No LuAnn Platters here, though.

Casa Rosa opened in 1981 and for more than two decades lorded over Tex-Mex in the Park Cities. An offshoot of El Chico's, Casa Rosa was an institution, churning out hearty Tex-Mex favorites in a dining room that felt like a Mexican hacienda, replete with pink walls, Spanish murals and a skylight over a giant planter in the middle of the space. El Chico and Casa Rosa also introduced Dallas to fajitas, which would go on to become a Tex-Mex standby across the country.

Walking into Dallas’ newest Vietnamese spot is in many ways like entering a forest. Hanging plants, draping vines and potted flowers hug the walls, ceilings and shelves from top to bottom. Sky-blue walls give an outdoorsy feel to the place, and soft lighting bathes the dining room with a natural glow, even into the evening hours. Wait at the front for a seat in the expansive dining space, where a jungle of hearty, home-cooked Vietnamese cuisine awaits.

Slutty Vegan (Vegan)2707 Main St.Slutty Vegan's specialty, the One Night Stand burger, is more than just a one-night meal. It oozes in a wildly addicting Slut Sauce that drips out of the burger in all the right places. Loaded to the brim and then wrapped in a flimsy parchment paper, the beast of a burger is anything but easy to eat. It comes stuffed almost superfluously with lettuce, tomatoes and plant-based bacon strips that fall out of the burger at each bite.
