North Judson Town Council Receives Update on Starke County Youth Club

Anita GoodanExecutive Director Irene Szakonyi and Mark Vendl from the Starke County Youth Club presented an update on club activities to the North Judson Town Council last week. Szakonyi noted that over 300 children participate in programs across the county that include homework help and enrichment activities that provide academic and personal success. There is something for all children from kindergarten to 12th grade.
Winamac Town Council Approves Four-Way Stop at Two Intersections

Anita GoodanThe Winamac Town Council members took action Monday, April 14 to unanimously approve an ordinance that would create a four-way stop at two intersections in town. The two intersections are at Agnew and 16th Street and at Franklin and Narrow Streets. The ordinance needs to be published before it can be enforced. Drivers are encouraged to watch for the change in traffic pattern at those intersections. The town council also unanimously approved an Arbor Day Proclamation.
North Judson Town Council Appoints New Park Board Member

Anita GoodanThe North Judson Town Council last week unanimously appointed Andrew Hughes to fill a vacant seat on the North Judson Park Board. He was the lone candidate who submitted a letter of interest and who fit the necessary requirements for filling that seat. The council members also opened bids for cemetery mowing. The town received only one bid which came from Gary and Sons. The company conducted the work last year.
Community Crossings Match Grant Project to Start this Week, Trail Construction to Begin

Two projects will be starting in the Town of North Judson that will greatly benefit the community. North Judson Town Manager Joe Leszek informed the North Judson Town Council members last week that the Community Crossings Matching Grant project will begin this week. The grant includes paving projects on W. Weninger Street from S. Garfield Ave. to George Street, E. State St. from George St. to Schricker Ave., N. Garfield Ave. from Cherry St. to W. Vine St., W. Vine Street from Sheridan Ave.
Pulaski County Man Charged with Level 5 Felony Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon

Pulaski County, IN – On April 11, 2025, Ralph E. Cotner was taken into custody in connection with an incident that occurred at 6336 West 400 South, Winamac, involving alleged intimidation with a deadly weapon. The incident stemmed from a dispute over tire tracks left in a soft right of way, approximately 3–5 feet into an unplanted field owned by the victim.
Pulaski County Issues Burn Ban

Pulaski County EMA and the Commissioners signed a disaster emergency declaration where they found that Pulaski County is at risk of widespread fire hazard because of ongoing wind conditions. Open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood, or other combustible material, with the exception of grills fueled by charcoal briquettes or propane is prohibited under this burn ban.
Starke County under Burn Ban

The Starke County Commissioners, with recommendations from the Emergency Management Agency and local fire departments, have issued a “Burn Ban” for Starke County effective immediately. Due to prolonged dry conditions, there is an elevated risk for fires to spread quickly and become out of control. Starke County has already experienced a couple field fires recently, and the threat is expected to elevate in the the coming days and weeks.

La Porte County Sheriff’s Office Investigates Fatality Crash

A crash in La Porte County Wednesday, March 12 claimed the life of a Kingsford Heights man. Deputies responded to the intersection of US 35 and County Road 400 South at 11:35 a.m. CT regarding a personal injury crash. Police say a white 2023 Ford, driven by 68-year-old Amy M. Kollar of La Porte, was in the process of turning left from southbound US 35 to eastbound County Road 400 South.
