Ben Brock has been a mainstay on the mid-Michigan sports scene for decades now. And that’s a good thing. As a prepster Brock was a standout student-athlete at Shepherd High School up through his graduation in 1996. Upon graduating high school and starting college Brock joined the football coaching staff at his alma mater in 1997 before moving on to coach at Grayling High School upon graduating college and starting his professional career in education.

EAST LANSING – It ended in the valley after a brief stop on the mountaintop. Such were the highs and lows of Saturday’s emotional thoroughfare that was the MHSAA Division 3 softball state championship game between top-ranked Clare and sixth-ranked Grass Lake from Secchia Stadium on the campus of Michigan State University.

EAST LANSING – And then there was one. One game left in the season, one game left with everything riding on it. On Friday evening from Secchia Stadium on the campus of Michigan State University the top-ranked Clare High School softball team squeaked out a tough-fought 2-1 victory over fourth-ranked Ravenna in a Division 3 semifinal contest.

Christopher Crockett capped his senior year the right way. Christopher Crockett capped his senior year as a state champion. Last Saturday the recently-graduated Shepherd High School senior became the first individual golf state champion in school history as Crockett finished atop the leaderboard at the Division 3 MHSAA State Finals from ‘The Meadows’ golf course on the campus of Grand Valley State University in Allendale.

It’s a season that’s going to be remembered for a very long time, of that there is no doubt. About the only thing missing to this ‘season to be remembered’ is how it’s going to end, yet end it will this weekend from Michigan State University’s Secchia Stadium when the 2025 MHSAA Softball State Finals play out.
