To give an indication of how established staff shortages are in our schools, parents and carers now accept the lack of specialist teachers as a reasonable explanation for a narrowing of the curriculum or a lack of quality of education. The top three reasons for grievances being bullying or harassment, relationships with managers and relationships with colleagues. Some have referred to this as the unprecedented “rise of the grievance”.

International schools in the Middle East must develop codes of conduct on recruitment to ensure a “dog eat dog culture” doesn’t develop with institutions poaching each others’ staff, a leading head in the region has said. John Bell, founding principal of Bloom World Academy in Dubai, said that there was a danger of staff “jumping ship” after only a short period due to a global shortage of qualified teachers and a proliferation of schools.
