FREEPORT, Ill. (WIFR) - Flaggers will direct traffic in the area during construction, and drivers may experience delays. From May 15-16, storm inlet repairs in front of the Mobil gas station will close the Read Park entrance on Moseley Street. The rest of Moseley Street will remain open. Residents in the area can access driveways, but may experience delays. At the end of each day, construction areas will reopen. Travelers are reminded to pay attention to signs and give crews space.

Brooks has been in the position since Jan. 2023 and was also the city’s first administrator in the 1900’s. In 2000, he took a job in the private sector, working for a national developer of multifamily affordable housing.
Agreement on multi-year contract reached for Illinois health care workers

(WIFR) - A multi-year contract for frontline workers in Illinois raises wages and reopens negotiations on benefits. The Health Care Council of Illinois, the Illinois Association of Health Care Facilities and the Service Employees International Union negotiated and agreed on the new contract. The contract extends through Aug. 31, 2029 and includes the following:Reestablishes a cooperative relationship for contract negotiations with the IAHCF.
Construction set to begin on U.S. 20 in Winnebago County

WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) - On Thursday, May 15, construction on U.S. 20 in Winnebago County will begin from Pecatonica Road to Falconer Road near Rockford. Work will include the milling and resurfacing of the road. Daily lane closures controlled by flaggers will be in place along the nearly 8-mile work zone throughout the project. Drivers should expect delays, allow extra time for trips through this area and use alternate routes to avoid the work zone when feasible.
YMCA of Rock River Valley to offer free swim lessons this summer

(WIFR) - The YMCA of Rock River Valley receives grants during National Water Safety Month, allowing them to offer 140 free swim lessons this summer. 100 free outdoor lessons will be available at Sand Park and Alpine pools and 40 free lessons at the SwedishAmerican Riverfront YMCA. Outdoor Lessons Grant: 100 free beginner-level lessons for children ages 4 to 14 at Sand Park and Alpine pools will be offered.

ROCKFORD, Ill. (WIFR) - The first mosquito pool to test positive for West Nile virus in the state was found in Rockford, according to the Illinois Department of Public Health. The Winnebago County Health Department collected the mosquitoes May 9 in Rockford, and the specimen tested positive for WNV May 12. In 2024, 72 Illinois counties reported positive tests for WNV in mosquitoes, birds, horses or humans. There were 69 confirmed human cases and 13 deaths, according to IDPH data.

The survey gives residents the opportunity to provide feedback on planning priorities, road conditions, pedestrian accommodations, public transit, air travel, snow and ice removal, landscaping, cleanliness of roadsides and EVs.The Traveler Opinion Survey is available now through May 30. Any Illinois resident over the age of 18 is invited to take the survey.

The free event takes place from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at Lincoln Mall, 1255 W. Galena Avenue in Freeport. The end time may vary if supplies run out. Families can receive diapers size 2 and up, pull-ups, baby wipes, wash and lotion.
