Categories: December 3, 2024 Head Saluki football coach Nick Hill will never be a maligned face in southern Illinois. Much like his former counterpart, Bryan Mullins, Hill is a product of SIU and will always be remembered for what he did during his playing days. But Hill may soon join Mullins as a former player who couldn’t live up to the same glory as a coach. Hill has been SIU’s coach since 2016, when he was hired as a 31-year-old, first-time head coach.

As construction crews reshape the landscape at SIU, students find themselves navigating an unexpected challenge: the closure of Lot 11, a high-traffic commuter lot. Just as students were preparing to return to campus, they received an email on August 13 announcing the closure of Lot 11, the red decal student commuter lot east of the Student Center, due to the construction of the Tedrick Welcome Center.

Jason Nugent has been many things–a writer, a teacher, a history buff, a sales manager, a father and a husband. The one thing he claims he hasn’t been, however, is a murderer. “I don’t kill people, let’s start with that,” he said with a laugh. “But [you write about] the things that you’re familiar with.” Nugent is a multi-genre, self-published author native to southern Illinois. Between two pen names, he has written more than twenty books in fantasy, sci-fi and horror.

The Intersectionality Project (TIP) is connecting with the Carbondale community to support local families during the holiday season by hosting a Hygiene Drive. The drive will take place up until Dec. 8. Items can be placed in the donation bins all over campus. Items to donate include deodorant, toothpaste, soap, feminine products, and lotion. Southern Illinois has many different opportunities to get in the holiday spirit. On Saturday, Carbondale hosted its 32nd annual Lights Fantastic Parade. The parade was kicked off with the lighting of the brand new Big Chill sign on Main Street, which is the successor to the iconic Dairy Queen that lost its franchise in May. The parade was full of floats dressed to the nines in Christmas lights, with even a Carbondale Fire Department ladder truck decorated in lights.

The cast and crew involved in Fierce: Musical Theatre’s fall production have been working tirelessly to prepare for their upcoming show with vocal exercises, prop testing and lots of laughs. This year, the RSO will be performing its production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” to audiences on Nov. 3-4 at 7:30 p.m. and Nov. 5 at 2 p.m. at Old Baptist Foundation.
