Akiak school’s theme this year is “from hardship to hope.” Seventh-grade students spoke to community members in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta village about this theme to learn journalism skills, in collaboration with Alaska Public Media. For this story, seventh-grader Nadine Ayagalria spoke with Akiak community member Lena Foss. Foss goes by the name Maamcuk. Maamcuk is a nice person, funny sometimes.

In much of rural Alaska, basketball is central to communities. In Akiak, fifth and sixth graders Yolanda Ramos, Amos Foss, and Brian Hunter reported this story about a basketball tournament that touches on why the sport is so important in the village. Men’s and women’s adult teams played a tournament last weekend in the Akiak school gym. They were from Akiak, Akiachak, and Tuluksak. Lots of people from all three villages showed up to cheer for the teams.
