Forecasting house prices is something of a national obsession — just not one that the British are very good at. Dame Sharon White has a new job. In January, the former civil servant and Ofcom boss will succeed Lord O’Donnell to become chairwoman of the consultancy Frontier Economics. Like the John Lewis Partnership, Frontier is owned by its staff, although White will be hoping for a smoother ride than she experienced in her four-and-a-half years chairing the retail mutual, where she faced internal dissent over cost-cutting and an aborted plan to bring in an outside investor.
