ELKO — The headline performer of the Stampede Country Kickoff Concert — which opens the gates at 5 p.m. Thursday, at the Elko County Fairgrounds — is no stranger to performing, the world of rodeo or Elko itself. Ned LeDoux, son of the late Chris LeDoux — the 1976 PRCA world champion in the bareback riding, a 2005 ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductee and Cliffie Stone Pioner Award winner of the 2005 Academy of Country Music Awards — has played in Elko before.

ELKO — On Aug 30, 2023, the rodeo world suffered a tremendous loss, one that truly hit home — not only his own, but also locally and throughout the country. Winnemucca bareback rider Trenten Montero — a 2019 qualifier of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo — was injured during the Owyhee County Rodeo, in Homedale, Idaho. After scoring 79 points on Macza Pro Rodeo’s “Half Crow,” the horse rolled on Montero and induced a number of serious injuries.

ELKO — There has been a five-year absence since Winnemucca’s Mitch Pollock qualified for his first and only appearance in the saddle bronc riding to the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. ELKO — For the first time, spectators of the Silver State Stampede will see a new event. In 2024, approximately 400 of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association’s 650-ish rodeos included women’s breakaway roping — which was first introduced by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association to the PRCA lineup in 2020. Now, you can add the Stampede to the list of such rodeos.

ELKO — Everyone in the top 35 of the heeling world standings of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has a three-time world champion approaching in the rear-view mirror. After taking the 2024 season off, Fallon native Jade Corkill — who won the world three times in a row from 2012 through 2014 — has his sights set on his 14th appearance in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. In his third world championship season, Corkill also won the 2014 WNFR average title with partner Clay Tryan.
