More than 10 years ago, a former farm store complex that included a feed mill for livestock sitting in northern Northampton County looked rough. “The place was a wreck,” said Marc Blau of the Slate Belt Heritage Center, of the unique, Quonset hut-style structure in the shape of a cut-off barrel. It and the surrounding property became “an eyesore in the community,” he said. Monday marked 10 years since the Haddad family reopened the mill and rechristened it part of Johnsonville Farm & Garden.

The idea for a playground came first to Jena and Jim Kelly III. “We were trying to get through the grief process,” Jim Kelly said recently, reflecting on the upcoming 2-year anniversary of the death of the couple’s son. “You look at different ways to manage things. One thing we learned was that to us, helping others was something that made the best out of a bad situation.”Beau Kelly died June 22, 2023, of a heart condition while spending a weekend camping in Lancaster County.

Tahir T. Sutton will remain free during a dispute over his sentencing in a robbery he committed in 2013, when he was a teenager. Judge Brian J. Panella granted Sutton’s request be released on his own recognizance, meaning the Phillipsburg man does not have to pay bail, provided he continues to appear at future court sessions and comply with any bail conditions.

A Lehigh Valley area man who is disputing having to return to prison on a robbery conviction has won a round in court. Pennsylvania Superior Court granted an order that keeps Tahir T. Sutton, 29, of Phillipsburg from returning to jail. For now, Sutton, who was convicted more than a decade ago of robbing convenience stores in Wilson and Warren County, New Jersey, remains free, according to his attorney, Elliott Love.

Two longtime Lehigh Valley nonprofits dedicated to the local Latino community have joined together to improve residents’ lives and promote intercultural understanding. Leaders from Hispanic Center Lehigh Valley and Latino Leadership Alliance of the Lehigh Valley on Wednesday announced the merger, which became official Jan. 21 with the dissolution of the alliance as a formal nonprofit, according to Hispanic Center Executive Director Raymond Santiago.
