WAYNESBORO — The patient was securely strapped to a backboard, but it was a long way up the elevator shaft in Waynesboro’s tallest building. Rescue workers used color-coded ropes, a winch and a special tripod known as the “Arizona Vortex” to haul the patient up the shaft to the seventh floor, where they could access the stairs to go down to safety. More rescuers prepared to drill through a thick concrete wall on the ground below to bring a second patient out of the abandoned building.

The Virginia state legislature has finally passed its budget after weeks of anticipation — and while Harrisonburg City Public Schools officials were happy with the state's decision to remove the school support cap, they are still worried about the upcoming federal budget and what it could bring. Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed the budget into law on May 2, implementing nearly $900 million in cuts.

On the first Tuesday of every month, food pantry volunteers visit the Commerce Village supportive housing complex in Harrisonburg to give food to a group of veterans who have become more like friends. Volunteers Deon Loucks and Jon Corser from the Harrisonburg food pantry Hope Distributed CDC bring a variety of items — “senior boxes” from the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, beef and cheese from the Farm Ministry, and produce from Hope Distributed — which can vary depending on the month.

The Buc-ee’s off Interstate 81 near Mount Crawford is progressing right on schedule and is about 80% complete, according to county officials, who are optimistic about the money and jobs the popular convenience store will bring to the county. After the recent opening of a new Sheetz in Mt. Crawford, Rockingham County’s smallest town will welcome another new gas station nearby — the northernmost Buc-ee’s ever built — on June 30.
