BIG DISCUS THROWSMaybe it’s just a windy time of year, but the platters have been flying far lately. Cal’s Mykolas Alekna flung one out to 229-11 (70.09) to win the Hamilton Invitational at Cal (April 05); it is the No. 3 throw in college history. His 229-8 (70.01) closer is No. 4. Sam Mattis caught a nice one at the Triton Invitational (La Jolla, California, April 05), hitting 225-6 (68.74), with Reggie Jagers 2nd at 209-4 (63.80).

The 3-day meet concluded with an enticing flat 400 featuring Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, but her competition wasn’t strong, and the stiff breeze erased any chance of a breakout time. Still, SML managed 50.32 in a controlled effort.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA, April 05 — Day 2 of Grand Slam Track came on like the second day of school with the jitters of the first day forgotten. The racing settled into the simple pursuit of winning your group and claiming the money. The first to do so was Matthew Hudson-Smith in the Men’s Long Sprint Group. After taking 2nd in the 400, the Briton came back to win the 200, posting 20.77 despite a -3.3 wind. Coming into the stadium on Saturday was very different from Friday.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA, April 04 — With daytime temperatures pushing a humid 90F (32C), thankfully the evening air softened conditions inside National Stadium, and the inaugural Grand Slam Track meet got underway in Kingston, Jamaica, precisely at 5:42 pm local time. Despite sparse crowds the action on the track was highly entertaining, and the new professional league pulled off a tightly managed event without a hitch.
