SALT LAKE, Hawaii (Island News) – The Salt Lake Neighborhood Board has been asking the city to make changes to a crosswalk at the intersection of Ala Lilikoi Street and Ala Ilima Street since 2019, after a woman was struck by a vehicle. Since then, nothing has been done. In the last three months, three more pedestrians were hit at the same intersection prompting the board to ask the city again. “This is the most dangerous crosswalk, I would say, in all of Hawaii, even the neighbor islands.

KAUAI COUNTY, Hawaii (Island News) – Christie Volkmer bought a newly-built home on Kauai from D.R. Horton in 2018. Two years later, she and her family noticed something wrong with their water system. “Something just plopped out. This blob of like slime just plopped out of the faucet,” said Volkmer. Volkmer said they later found out that the blob was biofilm and that it was coming out of not just their shower, but from everything in their home that uses water.

HONOLULU (Island News) – For the first time at Palolo Elementary School, students are able to participate in a music program. Henrietta Clemons, a staff member at Palolo Elementary, believed their students need more after school programs. “These children here come from low income housing. They would never have the opportunity other kids in the better areas would,” said Clemons. With the help and funding from the Hawaii Youth Symphony, a new music program for the students was born.

HONOLULU (Island News) – The City and County of Honolulu is looking for more staff members for its Summer Fun program. They are hoping to have 500 more people sign up by the beginning of June. “We are really hoping for a minimum of 10,000 kids, but that’s all predicated on having program leaders and hopefully junior leaders too for great enriching experience,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi.

HONOLULU (Island News) -- For Earth Day, the City and County of Honolulu is releasing its annual sustainability report and sharing several projects officials are planning for the future. At the Skyline’s Pearlridge stop, the city is planning to build a mobility hub where it will act as a center for different types of clean transportations. This hub will connect the rail, a bus stop for future electric buses, and a future bike and pedestrian highway.
