The family of a man killed by a police dog in Montgomery has settled part of their federal lawsuit, reaching a “confidential” agreement with the K-9 handler who unleashed the dog. Walter Pettaway, a 51-year-old Black man, bled to death after a police dog named Niko bit his thigh and tore his femoral artery in 2018.

In some parts of Alabama, groceries are dealing with bare shelves due to a prolonged bout of winter weather. This week’s frigid temperatures, along with one round of snow and two rounds of ice, have blanketed North Alabama roads with a treacherous film. HUNTSVILLE — Former Huntsville police officer William Ben Darby pleaded guilty Friday to manslaughter and will serve three years of probation for shooting and killing a man threatening suicide five years ago. Darby was sentenced to 20 years, but the sentence was split and reversed for him to serve three years of probation. As long as he doesn’t violate the terms of his probation, he will avoid going back to prison.

More than three years after police accused Patrick McCool of scooping up a tear gas canister at a protest in downtown Huntsville and hurling it back at them, the city has agreed to dismiss his case. “I always felt confident it would work out,” McCool told AL.com after court on Tuesday.
