Thanks to a bit of free, spontaneous advertising, millions of Americans are now familiar with the “Made in Alabama” brand popularized by the state’s Commerce Department. Last Tuesday, NBC’s “Today” show host Craig Melvin grabbed a “Made in Alabama” ballcap from Commerce staffer Lauren Rowland and sported the hat during the live broadcast. Rowland was visiting the show’s Manhattan set with her family.

A rapidly growing breakfast restaurant franchise has announced another Birmingham suburban location. Big Bad Breakfast-- the made-from-scratch breakfast concept from James Beard Award-winning Oxford, Miss., chef John Currence has inked a deal for its eighth Alabama restaurant at Parkside at Dolly Ridge. The restaurant, at 4317 Dolly Ridge Road, will occupy the former Biscuit Love space at the center, with more than 3,000 square feet of space.

A Marshall County man Tuesday was sentenced to life in prison in connection with his 2023 arrest on sexual abuse charges. Circuit Judge Christopher Abel sentenced Patrick Alexis, 40, of Albertville to the maximum allowable sentences following his April conviction:Life in prison for sexual torture. 20 years for second degree domestic violence.

Two Birmingham-based corporations have made the annual Fortune 500 list. And it’s two familiar names from last year’s ranking. The list, which ranks companies by publicly reported revenue, encompasses corporations totaling almost $20 trillion in revenue. It is the 71st year for the ranking. At the top, for the 13th year in a row, was Walmart, with revenue of $681 billion, followed by Amazon, UnitedHealth, Apple and CVS Health. Regions Financial Corp. checks in at 433, down from 428 in 2024.
