From hospital to home: 7-month-old returns home after life-saving heart transplant at Riley Hospital

INDIANAPOLIS — After spending six months at Riley Hospital for Children, seven-month-old Emmaus McCollum is going home. Emmaus will be going home thanks to a life-saving heart transplant, which marked a milestone for the hospital. Emmaus’s transplant marked Dr. Mark Turrentine’s 200th heart transplant. He has been with the hospital since 1991. “The youngest patient he’s ever performed a heart transplant on was just three days old, with a heart no bigger than a strawberry,” Riley Hospital said.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana State Police trooper, who was hit by a drunk driver while changing a tire on I-65 near downtown Indianapolis in January 2024, has returned to work. On Jan. 20th, 2024, Trooper Azariah Keith pulled over on the left shoulder of I-65 southbound near the 30th Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street exit to help a stranded car change a tire on the highway.

A 26-year-old woman from Carmel was one of the victims in a crash involving an American Airlines passenger jet and a Black Hawk military helicopter late Wednesday night. The plane involved was American Eagle Flight 5342, which originated from Wichita, Kansas. It collided with the helicopter near Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said 60 passengers and four crew members were on the plane.

INDIANAPOLIS — An Indianapolis family is still begging for answers after a 14-year-old girl was found shot to death over the weekend on the city’s south side. Police say detectives found the body of 14-year-old Deandra Staples on Saturday at the Laurelwood Apartments on Indy’s south side. “This community is crying,” Nick Glover, Staples’ cousin, said.
