Members of the Multnomah County Board of Commissioners have proposed a slew of amendments to Chair Jessica Vega Pederson’s $4 billion budget in an effort to save staff positions and popular programs currently on the chopping block. To do so, they are proposing to make deep cuts elsewhere in the budget.

Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson’s proposed budget would eliminate funding for 24-hour emergency veterinary care in the Portland area. Those dollars, provided to DoveLewis Animal Hospital and nonprofit On-Call Community Rescue for Animals, currently help cover after-hours care for sick and injured lost and stray animals, as well as the county’s foster pets.

While Multnomah County employees saw only modest gains in overall compensation last year, overtime pay continued to rise, once again fueled by spending in the Sheriff’s Office. That office has spent by far the most money of any department on overtime costs for years. Its overtime spending comprised 18% of its personnel budget in 2024.

As Washington County moves forward with its $2 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year, the government’s financial woes are expected to bleed into funding for key public services. The county’s budget committee approved the proposed fiscal plan on Tuesday, which includes deep reductions to agencies like the Sheriff’s Office and District Attorney’s Office, as well as cuts to animal services, road maintenance funds and library support.

Washington County Chair Kathryn Harrington told The Oregonian/OregonLive on Thursday that she would not run for reelection next year, ending a nearly 20-year career in local politics. The 65-year-old, who first won her seat as chair in 2018, said she will retire. “My time as an elected official will come to an end with this term,” Harrington told The Oregonian/OregonLive in a statement. Harrington’s successor will be elected in May 2026. Harrington’s last day as chair will be Jan.
