TEMPLE, Texas — For this Weather Impact 101, we are focusing on the atmospheric river. You may have heard the term and thought to yourself, what is that? Well, an atmospheric river is just how it sounds: A river in the sky. The giant band of water can be as large as 200 miles to 400 miles wide. The water moves inland and since it is near the mountains, the mountains push the water upward. Once the water cools and condenses, it produces rain.

Do we need a jacket to protect us from the cold or short sleeves to relieve us from the heat? We talk about temperatures everyday day, but do you know how meteorologists measure air temperature? If you answered with a thermometer then you are correct! The difference comes in the location of the thermometer.

Before you are dodging rain showers, Fog is on the roadways already across out southern counties. A Dense Fog Advisory is in place for Jasper, Clarke, Scott, Smith, and Choctaw county until 9am. Fog could continue to spread north through the morning, so everyone take a slower approach on your morning drive.

We start the week off with the potential for severe weather, nearing lunchtime showers and scattered thunderstorms hold a level 1 marginal risk with all forms of severe weather possible. Even though it is a low end threat keep your weather guard up between 12pm and 5pm is when the rain will move into our area. Try to limit travel as much as possible during the time rain picks up because flash flooding is also possible.

High pressure is just south of us so temperatures continue to rise to the upper 80s as warm Gulf moisture pushes in. Southernly flow brings gusty winds for the entire day wind speeds between 5-15mph and gusty up to 25. Shine will return by late afternoon once clouds clear. Overcast skies will be the view for early Wednesday morning.

It is a little chill in the air this morning, but by the afternoon highs increase to the mid to upper 70s. Very breezy also with winds up to 15mph and gusty up to 25. Winds calm through the weekend and highs continue on an upward climb into the low 80s. Rain will be hard to find as high pressure builds in keeping conditions clear and rain free.
