TEMPLE, Texas — For this Weather Impact 101, we are focusing on the atmospheric river. You may have heard the term and thought to yourself, what is that? Well, an atmospheric river is just how it sounds: A river in the sky. The giant band of water can be as large as 200 miles to 400 miles wide. The water moves inland and since it is near the mountains, the mountains push the water upward. Once the water cools and condenses, it produces rain.

Do we need a jacket to protect us from the cold or short sleeves to relieve us from the heat? We talk about temperatures everyday day, but do you know how meteorologists measure air temperature? If you answered with a thermometer then you are correct! The difference comes in the location of the thermometer.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - Happy Thursday! One day away from Friday and the chance for rain is moving in by the evening. Before you are dodging rain showers, Fog is on the roadways already across out southern counties. A Dense Fog Advisory is in place for Jasper, Clarke, Scott, Smith, and Choctaw county until 9am. Fog could continue to spread north through the morning, so everyone take a slower approach on your morning drive.

It will be a wonderful sunny day to enjoy with little clouds in the sky and no rain in the forecast. Crank your A/C on high by late morning because temps are already rising to the low 80s. Above average temperatures remain in the forecast for the first couple weeks of May.
