Washington Capitals radio announcer John Walton is back behind the microphone this season after a recent battle with colon cancer."I think you're a lot more grateful to be able to have the opportunity," Walton said.The 51-year-old announcer had an unexpected health scare this past summer following a routine colonoscopy."'We found something unexpected. Samantha Machmer became Elizabethtown College's first puppy raiser in 2023. She trained a Black Labrador puppy named Farmer to become a service dog. It's part of a program at Susquehanna Service Dogs to get college students involved as volunteers. Machmer spent 18 months training Farmer to sit, perform other tasks and learn manners. He's since gone back to Susquehanna Service Dogs for advanced training before helping a member of the community with a physical, mental or emotional disability.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association wants to see more women officiating high school sports. "I am a rarity," Sonya Essis said. Sonya Essis is one of only 19 female football officials in Pennsylvania — out of 2,176. "They don't realize it's something they could actually do. It might be the rules or because they believe that since they never played football that they just can't do it," Essis said. Essis is proof you don't need to have played the game to officiate it.
