SPRUCE PINE – Franklin County residents are urged to be on guard against a highly toxic plant that is becoming more prevalent. Joel Pounders, a naturalist and Spruce Pine resident, said poison hemlock closely resembles Queen Anne’s lace but poses serious health risks. Pounders said he found around 10 plants recently but was successful in safely getting rid of them. Precautions are necessary to avoid unpleasant side effects, he added. “I used 2-4D, a broadscale herbicide,” Pounders said.

The GFWC Alabama Federation of Women’s Clubs held its 130th annual state convention at the Montgomery Marriott Prattville Hotel and Conference Center at Capitol Hill. Becky Vansant, president of GFWC Alabama, presided over the 130th convention. Gayle McAlister, Cheri McCain, Patricia Cox and Susie Malone represented the GFWC Book Lovers Study Club. On behalf of Book Lovers Study Club, McAlister, club president, kept busy receiving numerous awards throughout the convention.

The traditional path to high school graduation has always been focused on preparing students for postsecondary education opportunities. For those high school graduates not planning on attending a university or college, this essentially meant they were on their own as far as finding a job. Lacking the skill sets needed for most industrial work, those graduates far too often had to settle for lower paying jobs.
