BIO:My name is Aya Itani, and I am a graphic design student minoring in digital marketing. I believe design and social change cannot stand alone, and so I always incorporate rising social, political, and environmental issues into my work. I think all social issues are intersectional, and as a designer, a duty falls on me to speak up about several topics. Originally from Beirut, Lebanon, activism is something I was born with, given the political and economic factors that my community has endured.

Kayli Cottonwood is the sole creator of the 7-foot-tall, 4-foot-wide sculpture on display at the Center for Visual Art. The display makes the piece even larger, reaching 9 feet in height. Their creation culminated in two years spent actively obtaining cottonwood branches and nine months of assembly time. “What Have We Lost” has no solid connections, plastics, or artificials. Only three materials are used: cottonwood, brass, and steel, all to highlight the beauty of nature on its own.

When we grow up, I want a warm house. a bed made with crisp edgeslinen sheets that have already been softenedby the hands of someone who thought of my skin. I want oak stairs. Natural wood winding to the windowswith pits and grooves our children will stick their fingers inglossed, without splinters. They won’t have scars like mine. I will be able to see the floor of the laundry room.

Looking back and forth once at my clay, then again at James, the cheap but handsome model l hired for my upcoming exhibition. Forming the clay to fit his plump curvature, the softness of his cheeks and belly. I try to keep my mind on the task, but the beauty before me is ever-encompassing. James has been my model for mere days, yet I find myself drawn to him. My work must take priority, but nothing seems important with him in my studio.

Competition is a familiar territory for MSU Denver student athlete Jocelyn KorbeThe air is tense and anticipation fills the room. Athletes line up to do warm-ups for the 100m hurdles in The Steinhauer Fieldhouse at the University of Mines in Golden, Colorado. Among the quiet chaos is Jocelyn Korbe, a senior at MSU Denver, Korbe is composed, and she approaches me with a sort of buoyant optimism that’s surprising for someone who’s about to spend a long day competing.
