Los Angeles and Southern California will see periods of rain over the next three days with thunderstorms and even the possibility of weak tornadoes as a storm soaks the region. Rainfall rates will be light to moderate, but any thunderstorms could produce heavy downpours. Gusty winds, lightning, and small hail also are possible. The rainfall arrives about two months after January wildfires in Southern California, including the Palisades and Eaton fires in Los Angeles County.

Clouds will increase at the start of the week in Southern California ahead of two rounds of rain fueled by an atmospheric river over the Pacific Ocean. The storms will mark the second significant rainfall after a dry start to the wet season in a region under severe to extreme drought that exacerbated wildfire conditions in January, contributing to the spread of two of the deadliest and most destructive fires on record in California.

Firefighters are gaining ground on three major fires in Los Angeles County, where a red flag warning that went into effect earlier this week for parts of the region was extended into Friday. So far in January, the high fire danger forecast is a recurring theme. There have been 15 days of red flag warnings in Los Angeles County through 23 days this month. That includes consecutives days of red flag warnings from Jan. 6 to Jan.
