Not to toot our own horns too much, but Hagerty Media is an organization that believes in continuous improvement, on par with the actions of a Toyota assembly line. This week’s Our Two Cents comes from a conversation I had at a local cars and coffee style show. I tend to be a condescending jerk thought-provoking conversationist in these settings, so a gentlemen who knows my style put me on the spot:What crossover utility will become collectible in the future? -Guy at a car show who I forgot to ask permission to use his name. It seems like every city or town now has multiple car shows that service the unique needs of their local car communities. They’re often held at schools, churches, coffee shops, and even at car dealerships. Of course, concours lawns and track paddocks get the job done, too. Shows are usually remarkably easy to find, too, especially if you have a Facebook account and use the Events Near Me feature.

A promise was made in of Our Two Cents, and today that promise is kept. It’s only natural to ponder the worst automotive smells after discussing the ones that most satisfy your nose. Sometimes you gotta take the bad with good, as cars are always a mixed blessing. It’s the contrast between the sweet aroma of certain gasolines and putrid 90-weight gear oil. Or the smell of a new car with a cheap interior versus one with really expensive bits and decadent leather trimmings.

Our last installment of included a comment about the ever changing timeline for the V-8 engine’s demise. It seemed unlikely for decades, but serious undercurrents are changing our tune these days. The transition into electric motors capable of frenzied, four-figure horsepower numbers with the docile, street-able nature of a lazy, big block Cadillac means that V-8s are no longer the only game in town. With that, there’s only one question left to ask: What will be the last V-8 standing?

Here in Our Two Cents, we do our best to keep our opinions unfiltered and unvarnished. Be it cars, trucks, SUVs, or anything in between, every vehicle has pros and cons. Sometimes the cons are wholly irrelevant, if you can buy the vehicle for the right price. Heck, I’d gladly buy a Pontiac Aztek if the keys could be mine for a cool grand. That’s a lot of vehicle for the money!But today’s question is more about brand-new vehicles, especially ones that are boring.

Even if you’ve seen it before, please stop what you’re doing and watch Mark Higgins in a Subaru WRX STI set an Isle of Man TT Mountain Course record in 2016. For my money it is some of the bravest, wildest driving ever recorded. Mr. Higgins beat the previous lap record—also held by him—by almost 2 full minutes, clocking in at 17 minutes 35 seconds. His average speed? A blistering 128.73 mph.
