I’ve spent a lot of time in Puerto Rico, mostly in the well-developed San Juan area, with its high-rise hotels and packs of tourists and cruisers. This time, I decided to explore a different, less populated area. In fact, it’s where many Puerto Ricans go for vacation for the best beaches. The Puerto Rican islands of both Vieques and Culebra may lack the bells and whistles of many tourist destinations; there are no chain hotels or fast-food restaurants.

Across America, street art is booming. The pandemic may be responsible in part for fueling the alfresco art scene because it was safer to socially distance from others when experiencing outdoor murals. Plus, unlike museums, such viewing is free and accessible to all, 24/7. With so much blank canvas available on the sides of buildings, along alleyways, on water towers, and anywhere there is a large, empty wall, every city is getting in on the trend.

My mom died at age 91 on February 2024. Instead of being sad that she's not here this Mother's Day I will celebrate her life. I see my mom everywhere, especially when I look in the mirror. This Mother's Day is the first time in my 66 years of life that I have no mom. She sadly passed away at the age of 91 in February. I used to feel bad on Mother's Day for friends who had lost theirs. Now I join them. But instead of being sad, I will channel my mother and happily remember her life, art and legacy.
