The West Kootenay Minor Lacrosse Wolfpack is ready for the 2025 season. Registration is now open for age groups from U7 to U17. Castlegar lifeguard Meagan Wyatt has been recognized by the Lifesaving Society for her "invaluable leadership" in the Kootenays. Wyatt has been an instructor for the Lifesaving Society since 2008 and has served as a national trainer since 2019. She has also served as a member of the organization's program advisory group, mentored apprentices and contributed to branch projects that promote water safety.

Castlegar's fire chief, Sam Lattanzio, is hanging up his helmet after 32 years in the fire service. Lattanzio began his career in 1993 as a volunteer firefighter with Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Rescue's Company 5 in Montrose, B.C. After moving to Castlegar in 1997, he rose through the ranks at the Castlegar Fire Department (CFD) from firefighter to lieutenant to captain to deputy fire chief before taking the top spot in 2017.

A private childcare centre on the grounds of Brent Kennedy Elementary School in South Slocan is closed after a fire severely damaged the facility. The fire broke out in the kitchen area of the Brent Kennedy Learning Centre (BKLC) about 10 minutes before the centre's 5 p.m. closing time on Monday, April 7. Thankfully, only three children remained inside the building at the time and staff were able to quickly move them to safety without any harm, according to BKLC's administrator Susie Myers.

Castlegar City Council has voted to extended two separate ground maintenance contracts for two more years. Kootenay Ground Maintenance (KGM) was awarded $82,882 for interchange landscape maintenance at key city entry points including the Robson Interchange, Highway 3 Interchange, and Rotary Interchange. The contract includes mowing, irrigation, steep slope mowing, seasonal start-up and winterization and ongoing care for UV-filtered and illuminated waterscapes and irrigation systems.
