Kootenay Family Place Neighbourhood House is hosting two community events this month. On May 14, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the community is invited to participate in Neighbourhood House Day at KFP's building at 767 11th Ave. This event is part of B.C.-wide Neighbourhood House Week. It is a celebration of having such a great resource in Castlegar. Attendees can participate in a collaborative craft, hear short speeches, have fun with face painting, listen to music and enjoy a free lunch.

Castlegar's new permanent homeless shelter is scheduled to open by December according to Reidun Rosi, Castlegar Community Services' (CCS) executive director. CCS has been awarded the contract to operate the 20-bed, BC Housing funded shelter at 2245 6th Ave. (across from the old Rona/Arrow Builders building). Rosi shared the update with Castlegar City Council on May 5. She also clarified information regarding the shelter's overdose prevention services.

Emergency crews were called to the 1300 block of Columbia Avenue around 4:20 p.m. on Thursday, May 8 to a report of a collision between a vehicle and a bicycle. The incident left the injured cyclist laying in the south-bound lane of Columbia Avenue near Kootenay Cannabis. RCMP was the first to arrive on scene followed quickly by the Castlegar Fire Department who provided medical support to the cyclist and traffic control as the incident quickly snarled rush-hour traffic.

A small wildfire south of Castlegar has been contained at .47 hectares. The Champion Creek fire was discovered on May 6 on the eastern shore of the Columbia River near the Blagodatnoye Loop Trail. BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) says it was the result of human activity. BCWS has already recorded 172 wildfires this year and a total of 1564 hectares burned.
