    The MLA for Kootenay East is marking a grim milestone for East Kootenay health care. Tom Shypitka says Friday, March 29, marks the 30 month anniversary of a temporary closure of the emergency department in Elkford. Shypitka is questioning how long “temporary” is in this instance and if the word is offering false hope that the facility will ever reopen, he says recent announcements about bolstering health care staff in BC have not materialized locally.

    Federal and provincial funds will help the City of Cranbrook move ahead with upgrades to its Phillips Reservoir. The City says it has been awarded $9.5-million through the Canadian and BC governments to add a UV Disinfection facility at the reservoir. The new facility will use an Ultraviolet disinfection and liquid chlorine system to meet the Province’s Drinking Water Treatment Objectives for Surface Water.

    BC Wildfire Service crews are planning a prescribed burn at Kikomun Creek Provincial Park next week. The Southeast Fire Centre says it could begin March 27 if conditions allow. The project entails eight spot sized research-specific prescribed burns, smoke may be visible from Baynes Lake, Jaffray, Lake Koocanusa as well as Highways 3 and 93.
