In its inaugural year, it was honored as the best new business in Castlegar by the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce. The News, along with its dedicated team, caters to the Castlegar area and surrounding regions, providing free copies every Thursday from Genelle to Playmor Junction.

    Castlegar City Council recently awarded grants to four local organizations as part of its community grant program. The city accepts grant applications four times a year. Prior to the new grants, $17,900 was left in the grant budget. The Kootenay Robusters received $500 for their annual calendar project. The city will receive an advertising spot in the calendar to acknowledge the sponsorship.

    It may be hard to envision right now, but the concrete retaining wall heading down Sherbico Hill is about to become a beautiful work of art. Work has begun along Columbia Avenue and the new pink swath will soon begin to come to life with flowers, vegetables and insects. The new mural is a project of Castlegar Communities in Bloom (CIB) and it is designed to coordinate with the 2025 National Communities in Bloom theme – edible gardening.

    Saturday, June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada and the Circle of Indigenous Nations Society (COINS) is inviting the community to join them as the celebrate Aboriginal culture. COINS is hosting an event at Kinnaird Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Activities include learning about Aboriginal culture and traditions, participating in crafts and games and shopping at vendors. The event is free and COINS says everyone is welcome.

    Castlegar City Council has voted to amend the pay structure for the Castlegar Fire Department (CFD). Previously, CFD had one pay structure in place for all of its paid on-call firefighters, and a stipend for officer roles. It did not offer higher wages for those who had more advanced certifications or training. The new pay formula follows a 2024 review of fire services designed to ensure the strategic and sustainable delivery of emergency services in the future.
