In its inaugural year, it was honored as the best new business in Castlegar by the Castlegar and District Chamber of Commerce. The News, along with its dedicated team, caters to the Castlegar area and surrounding regions, providing free copies every Thursday from Genelle to Playmor Junction.

    The Castlegar News recently received copies of two old print editions in the mail from someone cleaning out a grandparent's storage space. They were published July 24 and July 31 of 1975. These papers happened to be the week before and the week after what was then known as Sunflower Fest. The festival looked a little different 50 years ago so we thought our readers would enjoy the look back in time.

    Kalesnikoff Mass Timber formally opened their new modular mass timber production facility in Castlegar on June 5. The 100,000-sq.-ft. facility takes the Kalesnikoff mass timber vision one step further by adding new products to be used for prefabricated walls, flooring, modules, and full modular construction for projects that include student and workforce housing, prefabricated housing, infrastructure, and commercial buildings.

    Update: 5 p.m.  A resident in the area is praising firefighters for the quick action on a blaze north of Kelowna's airport. "A little bit of panic," Caroline Ivens told media when asked her initial response to hearing about the fire so close to home. "I got the dogs ready to go, got everything packed up." Only one house was damaged in the fire and at least two vehicles. Crews confirmed with a reporter on scene the fire has been knocked down.

    The foundation for the new Vancouver Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) team is starting to come together. From June 4-8 is the league's exclusive signing window, where the two expansion franchises - Vancouver and Seattle - have the ability to sign players from the six other PWHL teams, excluding players that are protected. So far, Vancouver has made a big splash, signing four players - a forward, two defence, and a goaltender.

    Ground work has begun at a new affordable housing complex in downtown Castlegar. The project is funded by BC Housing with Castlegar Community Services (CCS) serving as the program operator and property manager. It will feature 27 units of housing specifically for women and children. The three-storey compex will include a combination of studio, one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom suites.
