For decades, there has been an elementary school on the south side of Pine Mountain in Letcher County, sparing young students a bus ride over the steep, imposing peak to the next-closest county school. That will change when school resumes in August. The Letcher County Board of Education voted 3-to-1 Monday evening to close Arlie Boggs Elementary School, over the protests of parents and grandparents of students at the tiny facility.

A former official in Kentucky’s Estill County faces five years in prison after pleading guilty in connection with the theft of more than $75,000. Brian Crowe, 57, who was county clerk, pleaded guilty Friday to one charge of abuse of public trust and filing a false tax return, according to Attorney General Russell Coleman. Crowe agreed to a five-year sentence under his plea and owes restitution of $79,948 to the Estill County Fiscal Court and $4,687 to the state, according to Coleman’s office.

A medical practice with locations in Lexington and Louisville submitted millions of dollars worth of false bills to Medicaid, the federal government has alleged in a lawsuit. Arthritis Knee Pain Centers in Kentucky and other states scheduled patients to come in for treatments more times than necessary so the businesses could make more money, according to the complaint. That prolonged the time it took patients to finish their treatments and the time they were in pain, the complaint charges.

Parents of students at Arlie Boggs Elementary School praise the care teachers show the kids, the quality of instruction and the family atmosphere. But that may not be enough to save it. As the population declines in Eastern Kentucky, the tiny school on the south flank of Pine Mountain in Letcher County faces an uncertain future. There are only 103 students in grades kindergarten through 8 at the school, down from 121 at the end of the 2023-24 school year, according to the principal, Freddie Terry.
