Nelson City Council has voted down an application by a local restaurant to open a patio for cannabis consumption. The application by Yaherb at 512 Hendryx St., which is owned by resident Brenton Raby, was for a temporary-use permit, a designation that allows a project to run as a pilot for up to three years before council decides to rezone a property.

On her 100th birthday in February, Selkirk College gave Lydia Kania an honorary diploma in human services. But she doesn't understand why. "Why did I get it? Surely to goodness there's more interesting people than me," she said in an April 30 interview with the Nelson Star. Her longtime friend, the Slocan Valley writer Rita Moir, begs to differ, and says Kania is easily accomplished and inspiring enough to have a book written about her. And Moir has done just that.

Conservative MP Rob Morrison is projected to win re-election in the Columbia-Kootenays-Southern Rockies. Morrison, who was first elected in 2019, was leading with 5,038 votes from 80-of-310 polls reporting in Monday. Liberals' Reggie Goldsbury (2,450 votes) was running second ahead of the NDP's Kallee Lins (1,634), followed by Steven Maffioli of the Green Party (169), independent candidate Jim Wiedrick (118), and Laurie Baird of the People's Party of Canada (89).

Earth Week in Nelson culminated in a parade on Baker Street on Sunday, ending at the Youth Centre with music, games, food and booths. Throughout the week the event hosted 25 activities, including film showings, craft instruction, performances, nature walks, ceremonies, celebrations and a beach clean-up, as well as workshops and panel discussions on native plants, food security, forestry, transportation, birding and more.
