It’s not every day you can walk through a vineyard and help build homes for those who need them the most, but that’s exactly what’s on tap this Father’s Day in Comox. The event, called 40K For Them, will be hosted at 40 Knots Winery on Sunday June 15 and will raise funds for the WeCan Shelter Society — a volunteer-run non-profit that has already built 14 tiny homes out of shipping containers at Maple Pool Campground in Courtenay.

Leo was named the recipient of the Journalists for Human Rights/Canadian Association of Journalists Emerging Indigenous Journalist Award at the CAJ Awards gala in Calgary Saturday night.

Swimmers are being urged to avoid Transfer Beach in Ladysmith for the time being after routine testing revealed that the water is potentially unsafe. Island Health issued a beach advisory on May 30 for Transfer Beach following recent quality tests that showed bacteria concentrations above safe levels. As a result, residents and visitors shouldn’t go swimming or engage in other water-based activities at the beach until further notice, the Town of Ladysmith says.

A new public safety initiative aimed at tackling property crime and street disorder in downtown areas is being rolled out across British Columbia, and Victoria officials are welcoming the additional help. The Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement Program (C-STEP) will provide up to $5 million in funding to help police address non-violent street-level crimes like robbery, shoplifting and property damage.
