On Nov. 13, 2024, the youth, who can not be named under a court-ordered publication ban, entered guilty pleas connected to a sexual assault charge filed in Rossland Court and a separate sexual assault charge filed in Castlegar Court.

    The Youth Climate Corps BC (YCCBC) has launched their summer season for 2025, running programs in seven regions around the province, including the East and West Kootenay. The YCCBC program was started in 2020 by Wildsight, who still runs the East and West Kootenay crews.     When Basil Fuller first arrived in Castlegar from Jamaica 12 years ago, it wasn't very common to see a Black man walking down the streets of the small town. Fuller recalls a visit to the grocery store where he had an encounter with a small child who had never seen someone with such dark skin. In response to the child's curiosity, Fuller stooped down and had a conversation with the girl about his home country, being "Black and proud" and why he looked different than she did.
