On Monday, the wildland fire season was just beginning. Now, officials say, “we’re in it.”The Timmins 1 fire is the first forest fire in the area. “Located approximately 3.5 kilometres north of Gogama and measuring 17.5 hectares, it was visible from Highway 144,” said Isabelle Chenard, communications and media relations specialist with Aviation, Forest and Emergency Services. “There are three crews assigned to that fire, and they’re making really good progress with fire suppression.

The Filipino community in Timmins is growing and it wants to share its culture with the rest of the city. “I’ve been here in Canada since 1993, and you know, when you are here that long, you miss the activities that you are used to back home,” said Estela Aguilar Chow. Chow is the owner of Lady Luck Family Restaurant & Convenience Store and organizer of the Filipino Fiesta.

It’s a time for Filipino people to celebrate their culture food and their love of dancing and singing with each other and anyone else who wished to attend. Wet and stormy weather forced the Filipino Association in Timmins to move the festivities inside on Saturday, Aug. 12.

Canadian pop star Preston Pablo returned to his hometown of Timmins, Ont., over the weekend to wow a sold-out crowd. The homecoming concert was hosted by the Timmins Festivals and Events Committee at the McIntyre Arena on May 10. Con the Artist and the Lapointe Family opened the event. Pablo, 24, wore a Timmins High and Vocational School Blues hockey jersey and shared his love for his community and his family. At one point during the night, he brought his mom and sister up on stage with him.

Most of Ontario is under some degree of forest fire danger rating. The ratings are highest in northwestern Ontario, as well as near Chapleau and Sudbury. Officials with the Ministry of Natural Resources Aviation, Forest and Emergency Services said the wildland fire season officially started April 1 but heated up this month. So far, they can confirm 46 wildland fires in Ontario this season.
