Staff at the Kapuskasing Golf Club have been kept busy over the past few days cleaning up the course after heavy rain over the weekend. Club managerAndre Robichaud says water levels of the creeks have started to go down to their original levels but they were left with quite a mess. “The rain as we saw on number six the water was pretty high,” he said. “It came down pretty quick obviously a few of those areas are pretty wet at the moment.

The town of Hearst is looking at extending construction of the connecting link from 6th to 15th street until next spring. Administrator Eric Picard says they’ve made a request to the provincial ministry of transportation because approval for the funding was delayed due to the election.

A 24 year old from Hearst is facing numerous charges following the execution of a search warrant last Wednesday. Police searched a home on Front Street in Hearst and seized suspected cocaine and crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of $16,000. A 12-guage pump action shotgun and ammunition were also recovered. The suspect is charged with two counts of drug possession, unauthorized possession of a firearm and loaded firearm as well as careless storage of a firearm and ammunition.

The town of Moonbeam is ready to help mark Canada’s birthday next Tuesday with activities for young and old alike. Communications and Community Services Coordinator Marie-Soleil Veilleux says some of the events will kick off about noon. “The bouncy castles are from noon till 4 and the live music 1-4 and it’s going to be a new band homegrown from Kapuskasing Brendon Girouard, and it’s going to be country music and we have fireworks at 10 pm. We are very very excited about that.

In our weekly Kapuskasing and area history feature we look at part two a busy day for the town’s firefighters that was in the July 3rd 1963 edition of the Northern Times. The fire, which was the department’s second in less than 10 hours, destroyed a large barn that housed dairy cattle and milking equipment at the Experimental Farm. The cause of the fire at the time was uncertain but believed to have started in the west end of the barn which housed 40 cows, and ten calves.
