Two Heart of Gold civic awards were handed out at the start of the April 8 Timmins council meeting. The recipients are Julia Romualdi and Timmins Festivals and Events Committee (TFEC). Romualdi is an athlete, advocate and actress. Most recently, she was the ambassador for Tim Hortons Special Olympics campaign to raise money for programs across the country.

Instead of responding to complaints as they come in, they'll proactively work to make sure boarded-up buildings and property standards are being met.     The City of Timmins is driving ahead with buying new trucks and modifying garbage trucks. Earlier this month, the threat of tariffs paused the approval of two contracts worth more than $835,000. Timmins council gave the green light to the items last week, after the city manager got assurances from both proponents that the orders could be cancelled if "drastic tariffs" are imposed.

    Timmins residents renting out their homes for short-term stays now have to pay the local hotel tax. Air BnBs, Vrbos and other properties being used for short-term stays are officially part of the City of Timmins' municipal accommodation tax (MAT). It means the owner is required to collect a four per cent levy on all bookings to pay to the municipality. A decision has not been made on increasing the tax collected to six per cent.
