SUBMITTEDThe Drama Department at Highland Academy recently presented the play “Just One More – The Faith of Desmond Doss,” written by Autumn Grant. The play is about the faith, courage, and power of determination of Doss, who received the Medal of Honor for heroic actions during World War II.

The Portland Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting and open house at its new location on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, as a very large group came to the event to support the Chamber. Jacob Haywood, minister of First Baptist Church of Portland, was asked to dedicate the building with a prayer. Chamber President/CEO Emily Groves welcomed those who had gathered outside on the campus to celebrate the opening of the new facility.

Tennessee Senate Speaker Pro Tempore Ferrell Haile and House Majority Leader William Lamberth spoke at the Portland Chamber of Commerce’s Capital Conversations on April 4, 2025. The subject of the conversations was the state’s $59.7 billion budget. The meeting was held at the new home of the Chamber. President/CEO of the Chamber Emily Groves welcomed everyone, and County Commissioner Mark Harrison opened the session with prayer. Both Haile and Lamberth acknowledged that they had served for 13 years.

It took Mayor Mike Callis’ tiebreaking vote to approve a rezoning request for Planned Urban Development (PUD) at Oak Hill Drive and Highway 109 on first reading during the Portland Board of Mayor and Aldermen’s April 7 meeting. The discussion was long, with all the alderman voicing their opinions, as well as two citizens during the public comment period on the agenda. “I’m going to vote yes and send it to a second reading,” Callis said after the tiebreaking vote.
