A shocking scene in downtown Grimsby late this morning as suspects rammed a truck into Harmony Jewellers. At 11:20 a.m. a black truck slammed into the front of the building. Suspects, who were all wearing black with masks, stole items from the store and then ran through the downtown core on Main Street looking for their getaway vehicle. Witnesses threw water on the White Honda CRV as the suspects drove off, and one man tried breaking the front window.

A 54-year-old St. Catharines woman has been charged after police say she lied about being the victim of a sexual assault. Police were first called on Saturday April 5, at 1 a.m., to reports of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred in the area of Glendale Avenue and Kerr Street. Since then the NRP Sexual Assault Unit has been investigating, and detectives say they confirmed the allegation had been fabricated.

The investigation continues after a body was recovered from Lake Erie in Wainfleet. Police were called to the waterfront near Lakeshore and Brawn Roads, shortly before 7 a.m. yesterday. Someone in the area discovered the body, not far from Long Beach Conservation Area, and called 911. Police say the identity of the deceased and the cause of death remain under investigation. The coroner was called to the scene, and an autopsy has been ordered.

St. Catharines held its annual Volunteer Recognition Awards last night with many deserving residents being honoured. Recipients of the new Mayor’s Lifetime Volunteer Service Award, Mayor’s Volunteer of the Year Award, Margaret and Robin MacLennan Youth Volunteer of the Year Award, and Community Impact Award were greeted and celebrated by City staff, Councillors and Mayor Mat Siscoe. Brenda Zadoroznij is the inaugural recipient of the Mayor’s Lifetime Volunteer Service Award.
