Police are investigating after someone stole tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of Maud Lewis artwork from a home in Halifax. A man has been charged with second-degree murder following a suspicious fire and death in Centreville, N.S., early Saturday morning. Kings District RCMP, the Kentville Volunteer Fire Department and EHS responded to a report of a structure fire on Anthony Avenue around 3 a.m. First responders discovered a home engulfed in flames. Crews were able to extinguish the fire. Police say six people were able to escape the home and no one was injured.
Girl, 6, dies following house fire in Lower Sackville, N.S.

A six-year-old girl has died following a house fire in Lower Sackville, N.S., over the weekend, according to an online fundraiser for her family. RCMP, ambulance and fire crews responded to a report of a fire at a duplex on Riverside Drive around 3:10 a.m. Saturday. Police said a 40-year-old man was rescued by his neighbour and taken to hospital by EHS in critical condition. Three children, aged five, six, and nine, were also taken to hospital by EHS, according to an RCMP news release.

A New Brunswick nurse is ‘set for life’ after winning a $675,000 lottery prize last month. Mariette Cleven of Maugerville, N.B., bought her winning Set for Life ticket on Dec. 13, 2024, which happened to fall on a Friday. She scratched her winning ticket while talking with her brother on the phone. “He told me he never wins anything more than a couple of dollars when he buys tickets,” Cleven said in a news release from Atlantic Lottery.

Police are looking for a man wanted for the deaths of two people in Nova Scotia last month. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for the arrest of Ronald Albert Canuel. The Truro Police Service received information on Dec. 19, 2024, that a 27-year-old Truro man and a 25-year-old Pictou Landing First Nation man had been in hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Police say their injuries were consistent with stab wounds.

Police say a 72-year-old pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle in Dartmouth, N.S., Monday morning has died. Project Linus: Moncton group marks 15 years of handing out blankets to thousands of children

For 15 years, those who volunteer for the Greater Moncton chapter of Project Linus have been making blankets for children who need comfort at challenging time in their lives. More than 16,000 blankets have been made since late 2009 by ‘blanketeers’ – a group of retired women between the ages of 60 of 92. Among them is group co-ordinator Gisèle Julien. The retired educator got involved in the group thanks to a former principal.
