State Police provide updates on Chatham after-school tragedy

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — The Illinois State Police provided a series of updates on Thursday on their investigation into Monday’s deadly crash in Chatham. A car crashed into the building hosting the YNOT After School Camp on Breckenridge Road. The crash killed four girls and sent six more people to the hospital. Some of those who were hurt have been released. Speaking to reporters, ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly said he could release the following information without interfering in the investigation.
Car drives into group of runners in Charleston; police say no evidence of intent

CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — The Charleston Police Department is investigating after they said a car drove into a group of runners on Monday. However, they said there is nothing to indicate it was an intentional act. Detectives told WICA a group was running on Fifth Street Monday afternoon; they had to run on the side of the road due to snow and ice on the sidewalk. As they were running, detectives said a car swerved over and hit two of the runners.

Geoff Coon retired on Friday after 26 years of service to the City of Champaign. On Monday, Chief Timothy Tyler announced that he was promoting Lieutenant Gregory Manzana to replace Coon, effective the same day.

Monticello High School student dies in Monday crash

MONTICELLO, Ill. (WCIA) — Students and faculty at Monticello High School are mourning the sudden death of a student. In a statement to WCIA, Superintendent Adam Clapp said junior Andrew Beals was involved in a single-vehicle crash on his way to school Monday morning. Beals is suspected to have experienced a medical emergency behind the wheel.
