GREENFIELD — Game by game, a young Greenfield-Central team is growing, gaining confidence, and — most importantly — learning what it takes to win even on nights when it might not have its best stuff. For six innings Wednesday the Cougars’ best stuff was missing, but when it mattered most, they found it. At home, the Cougars erased a 3-1 deficit with a trio of seventh-inning runs to walk-off a 4-3 win against Delta and remain undefeated in the Hoosier Heritage Conference baseball standings.

FORTVILLE — Only five games into the season, Mt. Vernon showed it has the resiliency to bounce back after tough losses. By doing so, they remained perfect in Hoosier Heritage Conference play with a 12-2 five-inning win at home over Shelbyville on Tuesday. “We want to win every game, but conference games are where it really matters,” Mt. CHARLOTTESVILLE — After one of the best seasons in school history, Eastern Hancock is looking for even more. A year ago, the Royals saw huge jumps in all of the major events. They improved by 18 shots at the Mid-Eastern Conference tournament and placed third, were fourth at the Hancock County tournament, but improved their team score by 42 shots, and improved by 32 shots to shoot a 336 and place fourth at the sectional.

GREENFIELD — The 2025 Greenfield-Central boys golf team may have graduated its No. 1 player, but according to head coach Cliff Henderson, the team enters the year in just as good, if not a better spot than last season. Henderson’s team returns plenty of golfers who saw regular time in last year’s lineup, including four of the five from the lineup that placed third at the sectional and qualified for the regional.

GREENFIELD — Early-season confidence at the plate and depth on the mound has allowed Greenfield-Central’s baseball team to start the 2025 season off on the right foot. That confident play was on full display on a cold Wednesday night at Molinder Field. The Cougars defeated New Castle 6-0 to complete the Hoosier Heritage Conference sweep and move to 3-1 on the season. The win was the third straight after an opening-game loss to Lapel.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — There was a lot thrown at the Eastern Hancock baseball team on Tuesday evening. They dealt with frigid temperatures, a rival and No. 1 ranked team in Class 1A, and playing against a team that already had a pair of games under their belts. The Royals faced it all head-on in their season-opener, falling at home to Knightstown 8-1. “They handled it all really well,” Eastern Hancock head coach Chad Coughenour said.

GREENFIELD — Last season, the Greenfield-Central girls tennis team dealt with a lack of varsity experience and was made up of a young group looking to build toward the future. A year later, and with a season of experience under their belts, the Cougars are looking to that next jump forward. “We’re still very young, but we at least have some varsity experience this year,” head coach Michael Turpin said. “They’ve seen it and know what to expect.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — A strong junior class is set to lead Eastern Hancock into the 2025 baseball season. They’ll look to make up for the graduation of a talented senior group and will look to build off a season in which the Royals went 12-19 and 4-4 in the Mid-Eastern Conference. “It’s been a group that’s come together very well,” head coach Chad Coughenour said.

GREENFIELD — Greenfield-Central sophomore Isaac Johnson sets lofty goals for himself in the pool. He sees himself breaking school records and competing with the top swimmers in the state. In just two seasons at the high school level, he’s well on his way to proving those goals are attainable. “One thing that I noticed this year that I didn’t previously was just how driven he was to set goals and meet them.” Greenfield-Central head coach Ben Felver said.
