GREENFIELD — Boys golf in Hancock County has been in a great spot for years, and now, it’s as competitive as ever. All four county teams were within 11 shots, and the top three teams were separated by three strokes on Wednesday at Hawk’s Tail Golf Course in Greenfield to decide the county championship. For the second straight year, New Palestine came out on top. They fired a winning score of 160, narrowly beating Eastern Hancock’s 162 and Mt. Vernon’s 163.

GREENFIELD — The 2025 Greenfield-Central Cougars baseball team has been no stranger to the stressful, come-from-behind win. They had a three-run seventh inning earlier in the season to walk-off Delta, had a four-run seventh to walk-off Yorktown and, on Friday, they walked-off a nine-inning win at Victory Field in Indianapolis against Perry Meridian. NEW PALESTINE — On Sunday evening, the postseason path was set for New Palestine’s boys volleyball team. A day later, the Dragons got their first look at a potential sectional semifinal opponent. At home on Monday, the Dragons defeated Indianapolis Lutheran in four sets, winning by scores of 25-12, 26-24 and 25-21. FORTVILLE — Entering on a three-game skid and dealing with some injury-related adversity, Greenfield-Central’s softball team got a much-needed, bounce-back win. On the road at Mt. Vernon, the Cougars defeated their Hancock County and Hoosier Heritage Conference rivals, 13-4, without top hitter Savvanna Riall. The win moved GC to 6-5 overall after three straight losses to 3A No. 7 Yorktown, 3A No. 14 Indian Creek and 4A No. 3 Zionsville.

CHARLOTTESVILLE — At their own annual Eastern Hancock Invitational, the Royals had a great night. The boys track and field team ran a near-perfect race in the final event of the night, the 4×400-meter relay, to win their first team title at the invitational since 2021, while the girls improved on last year’s placement with a second-place finish. The boys scored 122 points, besting Hagerstown by two points, while the girls scored 109 points but were behind Herron’s winning total of 126.

NEW PALESTINE — After a pair of wins over Mt. Vernon last week, New Palestine’s baseball team took another step toward a Hancock County sweep, and to the top of the Hoosier Heritage Conference standings. At home on Wednesday, the Dragons defeated Greenfield-Central 7-1. The win moves them to 3-0 against local rivals. They’ll meet the Cougars again on Thursday (6 p.m.), at Greenfield-Central’s Molinder Field, to complete their two-game HHC series.

FORTVILLE — After being swept for the first time in conference play since 2019 last week against New Palestine, Mt. Vernon entered this week looking for a much-needed bounce-back. With six days off since the loss to the Dragons, the Marauders (5-4, 5-2) had nearly a week to prepare for and focus solely on the top team in the Hoosier Heritage Conference — 4A No. 9 Pendleton Heights (10-1, 6-1).

FORTVILLE — After reclaiming the title from New Palestine a year ago, Mt. Vernon looked to be firmly back atop Hancock County girls tennis. They defended their county title — and continued what they hope is the start of a new streak — on Monday on their home courts. After being postponed from the originally scheduled date on Friday due to rain, the four county teams met at Mt. Vernon High School on Monday to decide the county title. The Marauders won three of five flights for a total of 27 points.

Vernon rivalry went as expected. At home, the Dragons (10-1, 1-1) took care of the Marauders in less than seven innings for the third straight season, and picked up their fourth straight win in the rivalry by a score of 14-0.
