A controversial hydrogen production plant planned in Louisiana is on hold as the company considers divesting from plans to make ammonia and capture carbon from the facility and bury it under a wildlife refuge and fishing area. In a presentation to investors, the CEO of Pennsylvania-based industrial gases company Air Products announced it would delay its Louisiana Clean Energy Complex in Ascension Parish, southeast of Baton Rouge.

In the nearly seven years since launching this series, I’ve written about more than 70 trails and parks within a day’s drive of San Antonio. While all of them have been worth visiting, a few truly stand out. San Antonio’s trail network has exploded since my first post on April 2018 on the Medina River Natural Area, a piece of open space on the South Side that offers hiking, biking, paddling and camping.

Last month, I saw a social media post by the Great Springs Project, an initiative to build a more extensive trail network between Austin and San Antonio, about a new park opening in Comal County. This month, I thought I would check out a park I had never visited before on the Southwest Side, an area that could use more of them. At about 42 acres, Miller’s Pond is small but still vital to a part of San Antonio where public lands are scarce. The only other major park nearby is Pearsall Park, a former landfill that has some decent trails, a disc golf course and a brand-new bike park, among other features.

I got hopelessly lost the first time riding my mountain bike at O.P. Schnabel Park nearly nine years ago, ending up tangled in brush somewhere south of the park along the Leon Creek Greenway. I’ve learned to navigate the park better since then, and now I find it a shady natural oasis where I can lose my worries, if only for a little while. O.P. Schnabel is one of San Antonio’s large legacy North Side parks.
