The mayors of Longview stick around well after their terms run out. Of the nine most recent former mayors of Longview, seven of them still live or work in the city. They still cross paths at city events and coffee shops throughout town. All seven took a group picture with city manager Kurt Sacha and current Mayor MaryAlice Wallis when Sacha retired in February.

City officials are working to add more entrances, safety features and amenities to the headquarters and vehicle storage lot for Kelso’s public works. After years of discussion, designers have been selected. The roughly 3-acre site near the Southwest Washington Regional Airport houses the vehicle maintenance shop for Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue. Two structures on the site were built in 1979 and one in 2008, according to Cowlitz County records.

More than 70 new units of housing in Longview and Kelso moved closer to construction in the last week after being approved by the two city councils. The Kelso City Council approved a final plat design Tuesday night on a 53-home subdivision in south Kelso, which is being called both Fairway Vistas and the Retreat at River’s Edge. The final plat approval is the final step before construction begins on the houses and access road.

A rising number of thefts and other property crimes drove the increase in Longview crimes last year. The annual report from the Longview Police Department and Chief Robert Huhta highlights which types of crimes saw the biggest increase in 2022 and how the rate impacted police responses. Longview reported a 23.8% increase in the number of property crimes in 2022, more than double the average spike of 9.8% seen in Washington during the same time period.
