This past Monday, March 17, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) introduced a free, daily ferry service to transport hikers across the Nolichucky River near the former site of the Chestoa Pike Bridge (AT northbound mile 344.6 near Erwin, TN). Operated in partnership with Wahoo’s Adventure Nolichucky, the ferry will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily through June 15, providing an official crossing route for Appalachian Trail hikers this spring.

The ATC has received confirmation from USFS, TN DOT, and the town of Erwin, TN to publish a 3.6-mile road walk detour around the Nolichucky River. The Chestoa Bridge, which was where the AT used to cross the river at northbound mile 344.6, was completely destroyed during the storm. The detour reroutes hikers over another bridge further north on Jackson Highway.

The trial is due to begin later this Wednesday of a man who admits killing but denies murdering a construction worker in County Waterford just over two years ago. Maurice Boland, aged 37, of Bridgeview Close, Tallow, County Waterford was arraigned before the Central Criminal Court in Dublin this Monday. He has pleaded not guilty to murder but guilty to the manslaughter of Cian Gallagher, 26, at Barrack Street in Tallow, County Waterford on November 10, 2022.
