“Good enough” seems to be the running theme of the RAV4 Hybrid. The interior looks a bit dated, but it’s laid out well, and there are a ton of physical controls, which we always like to see. I really like the grippy, textured rubber material on the knobs and door handles, though I worry about how well these materials will hold up after a few years of consistent use, sunlight, and hot and cold temperatures.

While the PHEV’s heft is noticeable, the weight of the battery pack helps keep its center of gravity relatively low. And even with three-plus tons of weight, the Autobiography PHEV’s 543 hp and 590 pounds-feet of torque is more than enough to make it feel quick. Land Rover quotes its 0-60 mph time at 4.7 seconds, which certainly feels accurate. What it never really feels like, though, is a sports car. Power delivery is smooth, not aggressive.

Where the Odyssey excels is in its interior space and packaging. Up front, the cockpit is roomy and airy, with a centrally mounted electronic gear selector that frees up center console space for large-item storage. The front seats are comfortable enough for long-distance trips. In the second row, the standard bench seat — which can fit three car seats — easily converts into captain’s chairs with the middle seat removed, which is when the real magic happens.
